Peñafiel Castle.
Ribera del Duero is a designation of origin (appellation) that includes vineyards located in Castilla y León.
Starting point: Aranda de Duero, motorhome area available with refuelling services. Eleven parking spaces, overnight and free water discharge. Charging water € 1. Location included in our Map Áreas de España, GPS 41º40’13N, 3º41’37 ’W -48 hours maximum.

Aranda de Duero is the ‘Capital of the Ribera del Duero’, where historical heritage joins the traditional cuisine based on roast lamb and the excellent wines of the region.
Visit the Railway Museum, Museum of Traditional Games and church of Santa María La Real. A perfect starting point to follow the Ribera del Duero wine route.
Day 1 Peñafiel and Bodegas Protos
Peñafiel and the castle were a powerful defensive point for Christians and Muslims  in the 9th and 10th centuries. The castle controls the valleys of the Duero, Duratón and Botijas rivers.
In Peñafiel visit the castle and at the same location the Provincial Wine Museum.
Visit the town, walk through the medieval square of Coso and spend the night in Bodega Protos, included in España Discovery guide. Parking is in a quiet area outside the winery. To visit the Protos Winery call to reserve a tasting and visit. All information and phone numbers in the guide.

Day 2 Curiel de Duero and Comenge Wineries
Curiel de Duero offers several visits:
Doña Berenguela Castle-Fortress, located on top of a small mountain, is the highest point in the province of Valladolid! It is the oldest castle in the province, it is thought that it has been a fortification since Roman times.
The fortified Palace of the Zuñiga built in the fifteenth century, only the wall and the tower are preserved. The palace was known ‘Palacio de Justicia Mayor’.
The Church of Santa Maria, raised its outer part in the twelfth century and between the fifteenth and sixteenth the interior. Gothic-Mudejar art.

Day 3 Abadía Retuerta Winery
The Abadía Retuerta winery is located in the centre of the privileged ‘Golden Mile’, Valladolid, halfway between Tudela de Duero and Peñafiel.
In this magic area it is possible to find the most prestigious wines in Spain such as Vega Sicilia, Pingus, Alion, Mauro or Hacienda Monasterio. The ‘Golden Mile’ presents special climatic conditions and an ancestral wine tradition. 
The building was designed by the French winemaker Pascal Delbeck in 1996. The Abadía Retuerta winery is a combination of tradition and modernity, it is one of the most modern wineries in Europe.

Grape varieties of the Ribera del Duero

Tempranillo
Tempranillo is the most popular variety in Spain. The most important wines of the Ribera del Duero are obtained from this grape. It is delicate but with character, elegant, balanced and complex.
Cabernet Sauvignon
This variety works well in all kinds of climates, it is originally from the region of Bordeaux, France. Nowadays it is cultivated all over the world. It has a late ripening, ideal for temperate areas with soft autumns. Intense deep colour.
Verdejo
La Verdejo is a white grape variety with a lot of tradition in Spain. It is a white grape of great quality.
