Bodega Ismael Arroyo-Valsotillo: Get to know España Discovery hosts

Would you like to visit an amazing spot where you can taste the best wine of the tempranillo variety? In the town of Sotillo de la Ribera, in Burgos, Castilla y Leon, you can find the Bodegas Ismael Arroyo-Valsotillo , a stopover with a great wine growing tradition, with over 25 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to growing “Tinta del País” grape (Tempranillo).

In “Ismael Arroyo-Valsotillo” you can also take part in wine tourism, park your motorhomes or campervans for up to 24 hours and meet warm and kind hosts.
Bodegas Ismael Arroyo-Valsotillo was founded in 1979 thanks to the work of Ismael Arroyo, who in those times, alongside many other wine growers from the surroundings, dedicated his efforts towards strengthening the wine growing industry both quickly and consistently. The goal was to create the Denomination of origin “Ribera del Duero”, and that feat was managed in 1982 thanks to the approval of the Ministry of Agriculture. Today, members of the Arroyo family are in charge of the project and elaborate the wines in an historic cellar to conserve the family tradition, which has been transmitted from generation in generation for over 400 years. This was the dream of Ismael and his father, Elpidio Arroyo.

In this stopover included in the 2024 España Discovery Guide, the oenologist combine the richness of the soil and hard work with a perfect symphony that leads to an exceptional range of wines. It all starts in the October harvest, where grapes are picked at the peak of maturity (the vineyard is watered without trickle system and without chemical fertilizers). Then the stick-removing machine separates every single grape and sends them to a deposit so that they won’t lose form nor size.

Finally, fermentation takes place, a process that takes one to two weeks, and during which the sugar in the fruit becomes alcohol thanks to the natural yeast in the grape’s skin.

We invite you to tour the historic underground cellar of this stopover, a true cathedral of wine that has over 1200 square meters of galleries where the best varieties are left to age for years. In this room, the absence of vibrations, light and sound contributes to its aging in French and American oak, which gives as a result, products with an extensive aroma, texture and flavour. In Bodegas Ismael Arroyo-Valsotillo you can also experience guided tours and wine tastings.

The Tempranillo grape variety originates in Spain, and it ripens much quicker than other varieties, absorbs sunlight during daytime, and during night time the cold contributes to its tannins and acids reaching a point of equilibrium. Don’t forget to take some nice bottles for your friends and family!

Remember that you can park and stay overnight for up to 24 hours in the facilities of this stopover. On top of that, using the QR code of the stopover -which appears in the up-to-date España Discovery guide- you can access the location and contact the cellar directly to announce your arrival. Always show your copy of the up-to-date España Discovery guide to your host, it is your passport and ID for this system. And always remember to -please- follow the GOLDEN RULES
