Regina Viarum: Get to know España Discovery's hosts

Nestled in between mountains and cliffsides, with a view of the canyons of the river Sil, and close to the city of Orense, Galicia, you can find this unmissable stopover for the adventurous travellers of España Discovery, especially for the fans of good wine. We invite you to know the Regina Viarum cellars, one of the most visited projects of the region and home to the best wine varieties produced in the heart of the majestic Ribeira Sacra.

In 2001, the Gómez Araujo family took an important challenge upon themselves: To recover a 2000-year-old wine growing tradition to form one of Galicia’s most innovative cellars. Since then, and thanks to the effort of the team, the Regina Viarum cellars have developed their own wine growing culture that combines high altitude, precision and innovation, with success both in the local and international stages. In fact, they were the first cellar of the area to elaborate wine with the Araúxa (tempranillo) variety of grape, and the first to incorporate a vibration based destemmer for the processing of the local grapes, harvested at a 45 degree slope.

Regina Viarum, which is a stopover included in the motorhome-based tourism specialism guide España Discovery 2024,  performs an admirable job in the very steep canyons of the river Sil, where heavy machinery and modern harvesting procedures have little efficacy: "Viticultura Heróica", those who work here do it by hand, with a respect for the environment, taking advantage of the benefits of the Mediterranean, Atlantic and continental microclimatic influences and following traditional methods to extract the best product from the local soil. That’s how they deliver high quality wine directly to your hand.

Besides, the finca has  a very cosy restaurant where you can taste local traditional gastronomic culture, called “Vértigo”. Would you like to taste a bottle of Regina Viarum Origin to enjoy alongside a good steak made from the best "Vaca Rubia Gallega" (Galician autochthonous breed)? Another special attraction of Regina Viarum cellars are they oenotourism activities. In this Stopover you can get to know the cellar and the land where the grapes are grown and extracted in a tour that delights all 5 senses, which will allow you to appreciate the work this land.

Besides, you can taste many wine varieties and take part in a harvest day. Don’t miss out on visiting and don’t forget to take some good bottles of wine as gifts for your friends and family!

Remember you can park up to 24 hours in the facilities of this stopover. On top of that, using the stopover’s QR code (which appears in the up-to-date España Discovery guide) you can access the location and contact the cellar directly to announce your arrival.  Always show your copy of the up-to-date España Discovery guide to your host, as it is your ID and passport for this system and always remember to -please- follow the GOLDEN RULES.

The hosts of España Discovery do not charge you for parking or the overnight stay but of course ALL of them have something to offer. Each traveller (bearer of the España Discovery guide) knows the Golden Rules and also knows the best way to thank their hosts. Purchasing the products, taking part of the guided tours, enjoying a traditional menu, buying extra virgin olive oil or cheese.. That’s the best way to thank your hosts.
